news Players find secret emulation menu hidden in PlayStation Classic

Recommended Posts

A quick demonstration of the hidden emulation options on the PlayStation Classic.

In Please login or register to see this link. , we expressed dismay that the $99 plug-and-play device didn't offer much in the way of visual or emulation options, despite using Please login or register to see this link. . Now, some users have found those kinds of emulation options are easily accessible, provided you have the right kind of USB keyboard.

The YouTubers at the Retro Gaming Arts channel seem to have been Please login or register to see this link. that plugging certain USB keyboards into the hardware and hitting the escape key brings up a "PCSX menu" with an array of emulation options. Among them: additional RAM-based save states for each game; simulated CRT-style scanlines; modifiable "frameskip" settings; a frames-per-second display; and even the ability to change the emulation "region" to force 50fps PAL games to run at the 60fps NTSC standard.

While the video initially suggested any USB keyboard would be able to activate this hidden menu, further testing from viewers seems to suggest only certain high-end Corsair and Logitech keyboards (including the Corsair K70 and K95) can activate the menu. This limitation is possibly due to holes in the USB blacklisting in the hardware itself. Testing here at Ars' Orbital HQ found the Sleep button on an old Velocity Micro keyboard could turn the console off, but no other button on a couple of tested keyboards had any effect. Digital Foundry's John Linneman says he Please login or register to see this link. at a local shop with no luck.

In any case, this relatively easy-to-find hole into the inner workings of the PlayStation Classic's emulation makes it more likely that hackers will soon find a way to really dive in and take full control of the hardware, as has already happened with Please login or register to see this link. Please login or register to see this link. . We're just hoping someone figures out a way to hack a fake Symphony of the Night save onto the Metal Gear Solid virtual memory card, so Psycho Mantis can Please login or register to see this link. once again.

Mmm I didn't know abort the crappy blacklist, thanks yon4hra.png
Some of the source code has been made public so the blacklist should be hiding in there somewhere

Please login or register to see this link.  (Games list... well more like all the games there where tested on the thing)
Please login or register to see this link.  (Some changes made to PCSX ReARMed  for this thing)
Under GNU or what ever if you modify open source code you have to publish the changes. As "Sony" as modded PCSX ReARMed and embedded it into another system, the hole system is now one thing so it has to be open source at some point but most big companies drag there feet for as long as they can but we don't need source to hack the thing anyway :nepyah: but it just helps.

Also why you blacklist "Sony" :suspicious: you have 1 HID that needs to plug into it, whitelist that HID and block EVERETHING else... unless they do plain on launching a dual shock for the thing yon4hra.png
But i'm still waiting for a PSone Classic with dual shock and a "new" game list next year some time.

It's "Sony" as i'm still convinced they didn't make it. Some people where joking AT Games but I think it was outsourced to a legit company that handles outsourcing, Handed of to a intern or someones pet project

Please login or register to see this link. , right after a series of announcements related to PS4 exploits. It would be very unlikely for Sony to be able to react so quickly to scene news, but people were still worried that some exploits could have been patched with this update.
Since 6.20 was released, it has been confirmed by multiple people that the Please login or register to see this link. is still there on 6.20. (Confirmations Please login or register to see this link. and Please login or register to see this link. for example).
Additionally, Please login or register to see this link. has confirmed that the “Please login or register to see this link. ” he mentioned for “games” on firmware 6.02 (which we assume at the moment means a possibility for piracy, not much more, on the console) is also allegedly working on firmware 6.20.
Zecoxao also clarified that he is not the person who found the glitch, and has no control on when that person will disclose the method

Scene veteran Please login or register to see this link. has announced that a “method” for “games” is coming soon for PS4 6.02.
Although the tweets are pretty ambiguous, reading between the lines we can assume he is talking about a method to pirate games on the latest firmware.
Specifically, Zecoxao has precised that this is not a hack, rather a “method”, and that once it is disclosed, Sony will patch it. He’s also clarified that this will only be useful for games, which I interpret as: “you’ll get piracy, not homebrew”.

Sometimes the most clever techniques to run unsigned code on Sony’s consoles have emerged from “glitches” that were Please login or register to see this link. , and this could become one of those.
This announcement happens after two other PS4 hacks made the news this week, one a Please login or register to see this link. , and the second one a Please login or register to see this link. (most likely usermode as well) by M0rph3us1987. Zecoxao has clarified that the upcoming “method” is not connected to these things.

In parallel to this announce, hacker Please login or register to see this link. has once again given confirmation that at least he, and probably a larger group of hackers, have access to kernel exploits (or even more) on the latest firmware, but showed no intent to release anything in the foreseeable future.
Setting aside the ethics of piracy for a minute, this release, if it happens, could be somewhat destructive for the embryonic PS4 scene: given an option to stay on a low firmware with full kernel access but with practically no homebrews, or upgrade to 6.02 and pirate recent games, it is likely a huge share of people will choose the latter, reducing even further the pool of people who can develop and enjoy homebrew on the console.
(And, as always, don’t update your console until you really have to)

Hacker Please login or register to see this link. has shared a proof of concept of a semi-recent webkit vulnerability, which seems to impact the latest PS4 firmware 6.02.
More precisely, the bug impacts recent versions of the Webkit engine on PS4 6.00 and above, up to the 6.10 Beta. Firmwares 5.xx and below are apparently not vulnerable, possibly because their version of Webkit doesn’t have the vulnerable function.
The vulnerability itself (a bug in JSC::arrayProtoPrivateFuncConcatMemcpy) was first detailed on Please login or register to see this link. about 4 months ago. It is assigned CVE Number Please login or register to see this link. , and another detailed writeup (from September) on the vulnerability and how it is exploitable in Safari can be found Please login or register to see this link. .
The vulnerability has been fixed in Webkit several months ago, but it seems the patch might not have made it to the PS4 yet.
There is no doubt that Sony will ultimately bring the fix to their Webkit implementation. Additionally, user exploits such as webkit exploits are historically not useful “as is” on modern consoles*, where they are typically just used as entry points for privilege escalation (kernel exploits or Jailbreaks). Therefore, the chances of this becoming more than a proof of concept are very slim.
With that being said, if you are running on PS4 6.00 or above, you can give a try to the proof of concept by pointing your PS4 browser to Please login or register to see this link.

During the The 35th Chaos Communication Congress conference in Germany this year, developer Please login or register to see this link. (known in particular for his release of the Please login or register to see this link. on hacked PS4s) will be making a presentation related to a PS4 hack he has developed. The hack allegedly makes use of Video related apps on the PS4 (The Media Player, maybe?).
His presentation’s abstract, loosely translated, states:
It is unclear at the moment what kind of hack we are talking about here, but because the discussion specifically mentions video, this looks more to me like a userland exploit rather than a full exploit or Jailbreak. Nevertheless, because he mentions this is independent of the firmware version, we could be looking at some good news for people on recent firmwares including 6.02, who have been Please login or register to see this link. for quite some time.
In any case, this could be an interesting presentation, for those of you who speak German (the hacker has precised the presentation will be in German) and are interested in PS4 hacks. The video will most likely be made available online at some point, and hopefully someone will be able to translate the interesting bits for those of us who forgot their 11 years of German classes the day they moved to Japan. <– That’s me.
The presentation itself will be on Please login or register to see this link. .
