Fans of animated Japanese adult entertainment have suffered another blow last month, with just days after Tumblr announced and implemented a system to ban all adult content site-wide, one of the most popular western hentai websites, HentaiHaven, has been shut down.
The site’s sudden disappearance has left many fans shocked and dismayed. “What the f**k am I supposed to do on Christmas now? Visit my family?” commented one user, BlackerBible, on Twitter.
Although the actual reason behind the sites abrupt closure is still ambiguous, sources close to Anime Maru have indicated the possible involvement of the Russian government. A leaked cable from the desk of Alexander Bortnikov, current director of the Federal Security Service, implicates the use of internal resources to have HentaiHaven removed from the internet, and to help reduce the impact that animated pornography (“большой жир аниме грудь“) was having on the Russian populous nationally.
Russia has yet to release any official statements on the matter, though the attack is a possible response to the surprise revelation from Pornhub earlier this month that Russia is one of the worlds largest consumers of hentai.
“Its typical Russian geopolitical posturing” stated Hugo Voloshyn, professor of Eastern Media & Political Globalization at Yale University. “They start off fairly coy and tsundere, happy to brush things aside or simply ignore problems until they go away, but when push comes to shove, they have no hesitation to go full yandere, especially if they feel the situation gets out of control and could potentially leave them embarrassed, which I believe is what has happened here.”
The actual facts surrounding HentaiHaven’s shutdown may never be revealed. But the growing prevalence of censorship or removal of adult content on a growing number of platforms has left observers worried that 2019 may become the year of the “Waifupocolypse”, with additional rumors suggesting its only a matter of time before Kissanime.ru is next on the firing line.
